TikTok has been a massive success in the past year and now YouTube is trying to catch the wave. According to the Information, YouTube is planning a serious effort to counter the viral social media platform with a product called “Shorts.” It will notably live inside the existing YouTube for Android and iOS clients rather than being a standalone app.
YouTube is reportedly working on a feature that will enable users to make TikTok-like short videos. This feature is currently a work in progress and is expected to launch by the end of 2020. It is reported to be called ‘Shorts’, and YouTube looks to combat TikTok competition with this feature.
TikTok has amassed a huge following since inception a few years ago given its short video format and YouTube is looking to offer something similar for creators to dabble in. TikTok saw explosive growth over the past few years and the app has been downloaded by over 800 million users across the App Store and Google Play.
Facebook and other companies are now trying to launch similar apps. Facebook launched lasso a few months. Google has also launched Tangi for creators to post DIY and share short videos.
It’ll be interesting to see how this battle plays out. The feature will reportedly be introduced by the end of 2020, but if YouTube wants to stop TikTok‘s momentum – especially now that people are stuck at home and don’t have much better to do with their time – it will probably want to present its challenger sooner rather than later.
